A
third restaurant of its kind, Le Colonial was already highly
successful in Los Angeles and Chicago. With a scheme of colonial
Vietnam behind its look and exquisite cuisine, this was a place
of controversy and at the time curiosity. The concept of revoking
old colonial days may have seemed somewhat inappropriate, combined
with the appropriate food it was once again: Theater!
The restaurant had a large array of mouth-watering dishes and
was also well known for its highly overpriced drinks. Located
in the well-forgotten original building of Trader Vic's in downtown
San Francisco, the restaurant acquired a new entrance through
the back, glass covered roof over the long veranda, old Chinese
style red ceiling tiles, warm wood floors, and a general atmosphere
of mystery. An instant hit with the locals, it might still be
impossible to get a seat on a Friday night.
